November 9th

Today is the birthday of one of the world's oldest cartoon characters, Felix the Cat. Felix was created in 1919, and he quickly became the first popular animation character.and when I say first, he really was the very first popular recurring character originating from animation. It's easy to forget how relatively modern what we know now as animation is as a medium. I know my mother's grandma lived in a world without animated cartoons, and I feel incredibly lucky I was born in a time where animation is more accessible and popular than ever.

Back to the birthday boy, Felix actually wasn't named Felix until his third cartoon, and the name was chosen as it means "lucky" and could be considered ironic for a black cat. In his first two appearances he was known as "Master Tom", and he's probably going to go by his original name when he's up for employee of the month because DreamWorks owns the trademark on "Felix the Cat" . Also for the record,I've watched a lot of Felix's cartoons, and honestly my favorite VA for him is Charlie Adler, who voiced him in the second season of twisted tales of Felix the Cat. Like, out of everyone who's voiced the one silent cat, Adler's voice is always the first to pop into my head over his voice from any of his early voiced appearances or the 50's cartoon, and Felix really hasn't been in anything substantial since the 90's as it is as whatever DreamWorks plans to do with him is in developmental purgatory.
