August 29th

David the Contributor here. Today is Netflix day, which is to say that today marks the 25th anniversary of Netflix’s conception back in 1997. Yay.

Back in the pre-streaming days you had to rent your DVDs through the mail – or, more accurately, your parents had to. Honestly, I remember Blockbuster rentals way more fondly than Netflix’s, probably because the physical stores made for a more memorably distinct renting experience. I really just remember stacks of DVDs on the TV cabinet in their Netflix-red paper envelopes. What an era.

Anyway, now Netflix is a streaming behemoth and makes (and cancels) its very own shows. Right now its big-deal original series is Stranger Things, which has been pushing 1980’s nostalgia since 2016. Netflix’s actual bank of movies and TV shows has been getting slimmer with every new streaming service made to compete against it. At this point I really just watch movies I have in my VHS collection over and over again. Saves me a lot of money!
