Today is the birthday of an innovative rhythm game native to the PlayStation. Vib Ribbon is a game developed by NanaOn-Sha, a developer best known for the PaRappa the Rapper series of games. But unlike PaRappa and its spinoff Um Jammer Lammy, which featured character designs from Rodney Alan Greenblat, Vib Ribbon has a simple yet effective, low-poly, line art, white on black art style.
The most interesting feature of Vib Ribbon is that because of the memory features on the PlayStation, you could load the game onto the PlayStation, take out the disk, put in your own CD, and play custom auto generated tracks based off of the song of your choice. This has to make Vib Ribbon one of the first rhythm video games with a dedicated custom level generation system. The gameplay being simple and a little abstract probably helped, but that doesn't diminish the magic that a video game from 1999 had a custom track system.
