February 18th - Gertie the Dinosaur (Winsor McCay)

Today Is the birthday of a very special dinosaur that is also a very old cartoon character, one of the first in fact. Gertie the Dinosaur was created by Winsor McCay, an American cartoonist best known for the comic strip "Little Nemo". He set up Gertie as a Vaudeville act where he would interact with the pre-animated dinosaur as if it was a real dinosaur. Pretending a projection is a real world character is considered a fairly simple and old trick now, but you have to remember animation was literally brand new at the time, and Gertie was the first animated short most of the people who watched it would have seen. Gertie is even the first animation of a dinosaur.

Part of what makes this short really work is how much detail went into animating Gertie herself. The animation is technically impressive even on modern standards. Gerrie is constantly moving and all of her movements are incredibly smooth with a strong sense of dimension to her form. She is constantly shaking and swaying and moving back and forth, giving her a full, 3D look. You just need to watch this one if you want to see a cool dinosaur.
