Today is the anniversary of a movie that's a lot better than it has any right to be, The Lego Movie. The Lego Movie is an animated dystopian comedy about a LEGO Minifigure civilization being threatened by a power hungry capitalist and the only person who can save them is a generic white
coded everyman number 12 construction worker Minifigure and a large team of Lego figures that have hyperbuilding godmode powers. It doesn't hurt that the film was written and directed by the creators of Clone High. They even got Mark Devo to compose the soundtrack.
Despite being CGI, this movie takes a lot of inspiration from Lego stop motion. The film is extremely stylized to appear as stop motion, to the point that little details like paint lines and scuffing is apparent on the bricks in the film. Also there is a strange but good twist on the film, so I won't spoil it. This movie is a must watch to me and it's a film I'm proud to say I saw in theaters.
[ASSOCIATE NOTE: They made like "4 LEGO Movie" movies that seemed to sequentially lose people's attention. Sadly the one sequel they didn't make was "The Billion Brick Race", which was to be directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez [The Book of Life, Maya and the Three, El Tigre]. The film was canned because the other LEGO Movies weren't doing well enough finally and Gutierrez left to work on other projects, but it probably would have been better than the LEGO Ninjago movie at least.]
