Today is Elmo's birthday. He is still three and a half years old because muppets don't age, they just rot in improper storage. Anyway, Elmo was originally an incidental monster muppet on Sesame Street until he developed a character of his own. After that, he got really popular to the point where he had his own "Elmo's World" segment at the end of each episode for a few seasons. Also there was an animatronic toy of Elmo that was popular for a bit but is widely regarded as annoying because the toy was loud and hard to turn off.
It's easy to put down Elmo for being popular enough to overshadow some older muppets in recent memory, but you miss out on his actual appeal. And Elmo's actual appeal is that he is a very small New Yorker. He's just a little guy from New York and he's very friendly and fluffy and that's why kids love him. Sometimes you are very small and young and need a fluffy little guy in your life and that's a good thing to get it. Happy birthday little guy.
