January 17th - Kangaroo Jack

Today is the theatrical anniversary of the movie Kangaroo Jack, which I have "seen" a total of 3 times and it was awful every time. The movie is a bad "running from the mob" flick that wants you to think it's about a talking kangaroo. The first time I saw the film I was 4, and this is a story that has been recounted to me. We got in the theater a little late and my dad thought we were in the wrong movie. We left the theater room so my dad could check and the attendant flat out told him that the hip hop kangaroo family movie was probably not appropriate for a kid my age anyway so I got 30 minutes in the theater arcade while my dad got a refund and called my mom and we went home with a full bucket of popcorn.

The second time, I actually saw the movie on Cartoon Network, and I was surprised that the kangaroo only talked in a dream sequence and at the very end of the movie. The third time was on a school field trip where the buses had a DVD player, and me and my friend Kevin started riffing it. That was the only time I even slightly enjoyed that movie. I remember it got an animated sequel, but it was pretty much one of those direct to DVD Scooby Doo movies but with different characters. That being said, the sequel was still the superior movie.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: I have only seen the sequel. The fact that it could be a better movie than the first scares me.]
