January 20th - Penguin Awareness Day

Today is Penguin Awareness Day. Penguins are funny little birds that can't fly but boy can they swim. They live in the southern hemisphere, the northernmost species being the Galápagos penguin, which lives on the Galápagos islands on the equator. The biggest species of penguin is the Emperor Penguin at 4 feet tall, and the smallest is the 1 foot Little Penguin.

The most common species of penguin is the Chinstrap Penguin, which is named for a dark line of feathers that goes from its cheeks to its chin. The most fabulous penguin is the Macaroni Penguin, they have yellow feathered plumage above their eyes, like large, light colored eyebrows. The penguins with the most interesting babies are King Penguins, who's juveniles are very brown before getting their sleek black and white feathers. And that's all the penguins I know

You know quite a few penguins, Tom! I think another perfect penguin is the Adélie penguin, I remembering learning about those guys from Go, Diego! Go! as a tot. It’s amazing just how many penguins exist in this world, at the same time as us! I couldn’t ask for more!

Oh those guys are great too. Most of my penguin knowledge comes from the nat geo kids magazines I remember having a ton of as a kid but I think the only one I had left ended up in an arts and crafts project. I don't remember much of Go Diego Go but I know it was a Dora spinoff. Dora's been up to a lot since I last watched her bilingual antics, but I heard her one live action movie was surprisingly good.
