January 2nd - Grow Up (Calorific Rays)

Updated: May 16, 2023

Hello World, It's Calexta

Today is the birthday of my favorite Calorific Rays album, "Grow up". First hitting shelves today in 1997, this album is 47:30 of indie no-hit-wonder goodness. Some of my favorite C-Ray songs like "Outa Oxygen", "Computer Pinball" , "Cartoons Love Me" , their cover of "New Math" which was originally by Tom Lehrer, it's a no skip for me.

One thing that's particularly memorable about the album is its cover art. Featuring a bright red teddy bear, with 9s for eyes and the band's Infrared sign (⋊) in place of a nose and mouth, the radars [WEBMASTER NOTE: Calorific Ray fans are called radars] fell in love with the little guy, and dubbed it "Ray Bear". You can usually find a few different sizes of ray bears in their current merchandise portfolio, but by far the little beanie baby sized teddys are the most popular. That is, when they are in stock. I even asked Tom to get me one for Christmas but they are out of stock again. But aside from their rarity, they are really dang cute.
