July 15th

Today is National Gummy Worm Day. Now, this day holds a big question: Why do we usually make gummy candy in the shape of worms in a society where worms are not considered food? Well, it's a question that answers itself. Gummy worms were invented in 1981 for the still active candy company Trolli. Worms were stated to be chosen because of the whole gross factor, but they became mainstream enough the ick factor faded. This would lead to the Trolli company trying to outdo themselves in the gross out department and horribly succeeding. In the early 00's, Troli put out roadkill themed gummies. While the execution was cartoony, the concept was deemed a bit over the line, and they got a lot of negative feedback. This led to a rare occasion of a food being recalled for objectionable content. I'm just amazed that the concept of decaying animal themed candy got that far and they didn't think anyone would mind.

Gummy is kinda the perfect medium for gross looking sweets because it is as jiggly as you be and still be considered a real solid
