Today is the anniversary of some guys breaking out of an inescapable prison. Late at night, on this day into the 12th in 1962, Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris broke out of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary and left the island it was housed on in an improvised inflatable raft. For the unaware, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum security federal prison that held a reputation as a prison nobody could break out of.
The thing is, nobody is sure if the Anglin brothers and Morris successfully escaped Alcatraz. No bodies were ever found for any of the men, but there's also no rock solid evidence of them making it to shore. There are a few different things of people claiming they saw one on several of the men after the escape, but nothing considered credible enough to put a pin in the case. But sink or swim, these three guys got further out of that maximum security island prison than anyone could have imagined, and that's got to be worth something.
