Today the original rainbow Gay Pride flag was first flown during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade in 1978. The flag was designed by Gilbert Baker as a symbol for the LGBT community. The flag has spawned a popular trend for pride flags for specified queer identities, but the original rainbow is considered to have an umbrella over everyone in the LGBT+.
While the current "vanilla" version of the flag has 6 colors, the expected Roy G. Bv, the original had 8 colors, each with a different meaning: Hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic and art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. The 6 color flag is ubiquitous enough now that it received an emoji in emoji 4.0.
[CONTRIBUTOR’S NOTE: I often see a newer version of the flag with a chevron made out of the transgender flag colors and black and brown stripes, to center the community on solidarity and community anti-racism justice!]
