Today is the publication anniversary of Kevin's favorite independent comic, Captain Cavefish the Crawfish. Written by Ty Philli, illustrated by Violet Dawson, and first independently published by Prismic Comix in 1994, Captain Craw is the surreal story of an eyeless crustacean man superhero who finds himself in a newspaper style comic strip, where he befriends the weird kids and talking animals the comic strips are supposed to be about. Both parties end up bettering each other in unexpected ways, and there's a lot of fun moments of the comic book medium being played with.
Tragically, the comic only ran for 17 issues because In 1998, Philli and Dawson, were killed in a fatal car accident. And while their work is long out of print and hard to find nowadays, those familiar with the Prism Duo still regard it warmly to this day.
[ASSOCIATE NOTE: The late great Prism Duo also did the cover art for The Calorific Ray's second album "Madder Science'' and it's sister EP "Lab Ratty." A character from C3, The Bell kid's dog, Elvis Jr, even makes a cameo in Madder Science's liner notes. The C-Ray's 1999 album "Y2K Incompliance'' is likewise dedicated to Philli and Dawson]
I wish we would have gotten more out them, such a tragic end though. Nevertheless, Captain Cavefish still lives on in my heart
