March 29th - Piano Day (Black MIDI)

Writer: Thomas Bennedetto Thomas Bennedetto

Today is Piano Day. I'm not a particularly musical person, but I have the most experience with the piano. The piano is an Italian instrument in origin, having been invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian instrument maker around the early 1700's. Nowadays there's electronic pianos. And electronic pianos are very interesting.

Black MIDI is the coolest thing involving pianos I can think of off the top of my head. The idea is that you make a digital piano composition with so many notes it makes a high end computer chug. While there are a number of original musical compositions written for the genre, a lot of the most impressive and memorable black MIDI songs are covers of songs from the Touhou game series. Also if you find a black MIDI track of a song labeled "The Death Waltz", it's the Touhou track "U.N.Owen Was Her?". The actual Death Waltz is a purposely unplayable joke composition.
