Today in ‘85, Dire Straits' fifth studio album "Brothers in Arms" was released. This album is known for hits like "So Far Away" and "Walk of Life" which are definitely both bangers, but in particular I want to talk about "Money for Nothing". (I'm not talking about the song censorship except to say that it was something someone else said that was repeated specifically because it was an inappropriate comment. This context doesn't make it appropriate for standard daytime radio by most modern standards.)
“Money for Nothing” is best known for its music video. It was a groundbreaking early CGI short from Mainframe Entertainment (aka Rainmaker Entertainment) who went on to be known for the TV shows "Reboot" and "Beast Wars". The video won the Video of the Year at the ‘86 MTV Music Video Awards, but this was not the only honor they received from MTV: “Money for Nothing” fittingly ended up as the first video broadcast on MTV Europe.
