Today is National Hamburger Day. The origin of the hamburger is a bit of a mystery; a lot of people lay claims on its invention, and when that happens the truth gets kinda fuzzy for later generations. Here’s some things we do know. The predecessor to the hamburger is the Hamburg Steak, a portion of ground beef formed into a thick patty. Then 1885 happened.
In 1885 two different parties started claiming they invented hamburgers. However, one guy (Charlie Nagreen) was selling what we now call meatball sliders, and the other guys (Frank and Charles Menches) were making beef sausage patties on non bun bread. Then later, some guy (Oscar Weber Bilby) started using buns. And then I think a fourth guy (Louis Lassen) also invented one himself by accident a bit later. I feel like at the end of the day, it's a really simple concept where a lot of different people brought their own ideas to the table and we ended up with the modern hamburger.
