May 31st - Zero Wing

Updated: Feb 12, 2023

Today in 1989, Zero Wing came out on the Sega Mega Drive. Zero Wing is a game best known for having one of the worst English translations ever made. If you've been on the internet for too long, or you're one of the 14+ kids who likes googling memes that were popular when they were a baby, you already know "All your base are belong to us". Remember that gem? Old memes are weird. Anyway there's even more broken English quotes from the game next to the base one. For starts, the phrase "What Happen?" was in there, as was the painfully tensed "You know what you doing". Yeah, interviews state that the reason the translation is so bad is that Sega Europe’s sole translator for the project wasn’t exactly a native speaker. It seems like they assumed nobody would care about the European exclusive English translation of an arcade to home console port. They definitely didn't bet on the internet making sure everyone remembers it happened years later. [EDITOR’S NOTE: When Tom told me this was going to be on the website, I texted back “Somebody set up us the bomb.” He asked if I was okay. I’d call him uncultured, but I just appreciate the concern. For great justice.]
