Today is Free Comic Book Day. It's the only holiday I can think of based around explicitly getting something for free. It's a little advertising thing made up by Diamond Comic Distributors, who pretty much have a monopoly on comic book distribution in the United States. And yeah, the purpose is to get people to check out their local comic book stores.
That being said, the Free Comic Book Day comics are usually one-offs or entry points. The other thing is that due to obvious limits on how many of the free comics you can take, people who really get into it will visit every participating comic book store within walking and/ or driving distance. Like a pub crawl, but for people who care about comic books instead of booze. Not to imply that liking comics and alcohol are mutually exclusive. There's probably a few books worth of comic book inspired cocktail recipes out there proving such.
