November 24th

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, but I don't really respect it as a holiday, so I'm going to just talk about a fun, rebellious tradition tied to the holiday. "Alice's Restaurant" is the best known song by folk artist Arlo Guthrie. The song is about a man getting rejected for draft because he was convicted for dumping garbage after all the dumps in his area were closed for Thanksgiving. This song is also considered a Thanksgiving tradition for a lot of people.

Aside from Thanksgiving being part of the setting of the first part of the story, the song is more about politics than the holidays. The key to why it's considered traditional is said to be from a professional utility. The song is 18 minutes long and, as I've heard it, radio DJs would put it on so they would have a little under 20 minutes to snag food during their sets. I'm being kidna wishy-washy because I can't find a solid source for this fact but I've heard it a couple times over the years and it makes as much sense as anything else at this point. Also the song got a movie but I don't know if it was any good or not. So eh, Thanksgiving.
