November 5th

Today is the birthday of the first Japanese Language Vocaloid, MEIKO. MEIKO was originally planned to be published directly alongside a male voicebank, but KAITO took a little more time (read: two more years), so she was the only Japanese Vocaloid for a while, and she really set the standard for a lot of the Vocaloids that came after her.

For starters, she was the first vocaloid with a solid avatar. While it's considered standard for Vocaloid now,of the three English voicebanks that came before MEIKO, LOLA and LEON both had clipart of human lips on their boxes, and MIRIAM had a picture of her voice provider on the box. MEIKO was the first Vocaloid to really be her own character. And the main character trait I remember her having is that she really likes sake. I don't know the logistics of a synthesized voice bank getting drunk but I've watched too much Futurama to question a robot drinking too hard at this point.
