Today is National Playing Card Collection Day. Playing card decks are a pretty solid thing to collect. You have a lot of cool designs and variants and unless something extra fancy is going on, they rarely exceed $20 a deck, and you can still find a basic pack for like $2. Sometimes playing card decks are just excuses to reprint cool art, and some decks are more of a box of art prints than a game.

My favorite deck of cards in my personal collection has to be my They Might Be Giants deck. It's a lovely deck themed to mysterious beasties. Cryptids, Hoaxes, Paranormal, and Myths replace the typical four suits. Jokers are the Mongolian Death Worm and a Ningen.

[ASSOCIATE NOTE: I'm surprised by the presence of the Ningen considering how relatively new it is as a mysterious monster. A Japanese cryptid, its first sightings can be traced back to the website 2Chan in the 00's. The Ningen is often described as whale-like with human-like limbs. Visually is comparable to both more monstrous interpretations of merfolk and the also contemporary Fresno Nightcrawler]

The card backing is the band's logo, but otherwise the deck doesn't really have anything to do with any of TMBG's songs or albums in particular. Despite this, the deck does carry an aesthetic consistent with the band's vibe, and it's They Might Be Giants, so they have a great vibe

That deck sounds SO WICKED. I wouldn’t think of the Ningen being there either! I need to work on my card collecting. I gave most of my Pokémon cards to my little brother, but got some back. I also have some Dragon Ball cards I saved from when I was a kid, I remember I ended up throwing a bunch out during a spring clean up and I deeply regret that to this day.
