Today in 1985, the Nintendo Entertainment System first launched in North America. The NES was a video game console that re-established the video game market in the United States after Atari and friends spent too much time making bad decisions. It's also the origin of some of Nintendo's biggest continuing franchises, such as The Legend of Zelda and Metroid.
The thing that hurts my brain is how small NES games are. Super Mario Bros for the NES is only 32kB. The thumbnail for this article is probably a little over 600kB. The biggest game on the system, Kirby's Adventure, was a little under 800kB. You could store the system's entire North American library on less than half a gigabyte of storage. And video games can be several gigabytes large now. Mario really is the world's smallest Italian man.
