Today is the 27th anniversary of Gumby: The Movie hitting theaters. The Gumby Movie is a movie. Gumby is a weird cartoon about a little green man who is best friends with a talking horse, a blob woman, and a grumpy dinosaur. In the movie, he also gets a backing band of guys with belts, girlfriend, and her friend. There's also two blockheads who legitimately want Gumby dead because he keeps stopping them from ruining other people's lives.
The Gumby Movie is kinda weird because it's a Gumby short that keeps going. They parody Star Wars at one point. This film looks and feels like it was made in the 70's, so it’s a surprise to see it’s from 1995. Like, The Nightmare Before Christmas had been out for two years and everyone's expectations for stop motion were higher than this movie could match. The film is good for what it is, but it's just a Gumby short that just keeps going. If you don't think you'd like that, this is one to pass on. If a two hour Gumby short sounds good to you, well, you've probably already watched this anyway. But if you haven't and this sounds good, it isn't hard to find.
Well obviously your puny brain can't fully comprehend the genius that is Gumby: The Movie. It's not just "good for what it is", it's a cinematic masterpiece whose dadaist approach to storytelling clearly went over your head.
