Today is Salmon Day. Salmon are a hardy breed of fish. They are popular as food with both humans and bears. Salmon are seen as a great animal to explain life cycles, as their life cycles are very consistent and circular, while being a little bit more complicated than the life cycle of say, a butterfly.

Salmon start their lives in freshwater, but as they get older, they head to the open ocean. There they spend most of their lives in an immature state, eating and getting bigger. Then they go home. They return to the rivers they were born in to become parents themselves. Then, with their biological clocks spent, they pass away. And this is all assuming a human, bear, or other predator doesn't get them first. Life like that would leave you a hardy fish.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: At the time of editing, I’m hooked (pun intended) on Splatoon 3, a game which prominently features salmon-based creatures. I dedicate today to Smallfry, the player character’s goofy little buddy from story mode. He’s earned it.]

They’re certainly very fascinating fish. It’s always been intriguing to me how salmon will change their entire physique once they become ‘spawning adults’. It’s almost grotesque, Mother Nature is strikingly peculiar.

(And I can tell you — even if you never eat it, salmon tastes deeeelicious with some butter and a little lemon! I also use it brined, for filling my homemade onigiri.)
