Something New Friday: "Macarena"

I come to you all with another, but shorter this time, unraveling of another one hit wonder you probably already know. However this time we are talking about a song whose contents has been set aside for its accompanying dance. "Macarena" by the Latin pop duo Los del Río was first released in 1993. The earliest version of the song is fully in Spanish, and tells the story of a woman named Macarena. Macarena's situation is that she hooked up with her boyfriend's two friends when he was getting drafted. She is then stated to have a desire to move to New York, work in the fashion industry, and get a new boyfriend. Then in 1995, a remix with a new set of mostly English lyrics was produced by some guys called the "Bayside Boys", who didn't do any other notable remixes. Anyway this English language remix is the version of the song present in the official music video. And the lyrics of this English remix seem to take place chronologically after the original Spanish. The English version of the song ,all but the unchanged chorus, is sung by Carla Vanessa. The song is now from the perspective of Maarena herself. She tells her audience that all the boys want her, don't worry about her boyfriend she cheated on, because she hated him the whole time anyway, and if you can find her you can join her on the dancefloor. The English translation is thus a sequel to the original song, where Macerana has moved on like she planned. Her speaking English could be a sign she has moved from her undetermined, Spanish speaking, wherever she was living in the first song, to somewhere with a higher English speaking population. Her boyfriend she cheated on for his friends is not in the picture. It's impossible to say how her fashion plans went, but she's asking for company at the disco. Personality, I like to think, if the character of Macerana was around today, she probably hung around in the clubs for a bit more, and got married to someone with too much money. She used this marriage money to launch her fashion dreams. Then when she got older than her wealthy spouse liked he split the marriage and this left her with a large pile of divorce money alongside her fashion business. And at this point she's on the rebound again and she ended up putting this energy into her fashion, creating her magnum opus. Also now she's a rich cougar. I don't know how this dissolved into me writing fanfiction for a one hit wonder song, but life is funny like that.
